Veterans walk 100km for charity

A team of veterans from Salisbury have walked 100km to raise money for a Wilton charity building the UK’s first purpose built campus for returning veterans.

The annual walk, organised by Waves Training, will be sharing out its latest fundraising efforts between Our Wilton, SSAFA and the Armed Forces Charity.

Over 12 people took part in the event which raised thousands to be distributed among the three charities.

Four managed to complete the full 100km, or 62 miles taking 17 hours of walking and cycling.

Our Wilton is behind the project at the former Erskine Barracks which will see the UK’s first purpose built campus for service veterans.

The campus will include at least 44 homes for veterans who will rent the units for a period of between six to 24 months while they receive business and skills training.

The homes will sit alongside an enterprise hub, crèche, care home and retail units.

The charity needs to raise millions to fund this unique project. Earlier this year it was awarded a major grant of half a million pounds from the Armed Forces Covenant.

The grant will help fund the building of the veterans’ accommodation on the site.

Sue Harper from Our Wilton said: “This is an exciting project and one the community is really getting behind.

“Any fundraising efforts are hugely appreciated by us and by the communities that will benefit from the campus when it’s up and running.

“The support from Waves Training has been terrific. As the project progresses we will be working very closely with them and they will play a crucial role in delivering training for the veterans housed on the site.

“They have a very strong military background and understand how hard it is for those who have just left the forces to readjust to life on the outside.”

Waves Training, based in Winterbourne Stoke near Salisbury was set up four years ago. It employs a team of veterans, spouses and reservists.

Waves Training managing director, Lou Whiting said: “Military charities and organisations are very close to our heart and we’re delighted to support Our Wilton, SSAFA and the Armed Forces Charity in this latest round or fundraisings.

“Waves encourages a spirit of adventure and with our strong military ethos we enjoy the challenges of arduous events whilst raising money for charities close to our hearts.”

“Our own individual military connections and experiences make us passionate and committed to remain linked with Defence.  This commitment is reflected through our 100% Forces connected staff, raising funds for Forces’ charities and as a Company, providing quality consultancy services. Waves is also wholly committed to the Armed Forces Covenant.”
